Art Appreciation
The Cossitt School PTC brings a love of art and artistic expression into every Cossitt classroom through its' Art Appreciation Program.
Each month volunteers introduce the children to different ideas in art by sharing the stories, techniques, and works of great artists. We do not teach art, but share our appreciation of artistic expression from drawings to textiles.
The PTC's Art Appreciation Committee prepares a schedule of presentations which take place from October through May, preferably in the third week of each month. Each volunteer works with the classroom teacher to decide the best time for the presentation.
Volunteers are provided with a list of artists to cover, background materials, prints, and suggested hands-on projects. An orientation meeting is held at the beginning of each school year.
If you have any questions contact Committee Chairs.
There is a wealth of information on the Internet to assist Art Appreciation volunteers. We've provided links to three of our favorite ones below.
- Art Access at the Art Institute of Chicago
- Web Museum
- Global Gallery
The Cossitt PTC Art Appreciation Committee has also compiled a library of research books for volunteers. These books can be used in preparing presentations.
Since the same artists are presented in consecutive months it is very important for all materials and books to be returned to the Art Appreciation Room as soon as a presentation is completed. Volunteers are also asked to recommend resources they've found useful in their preparations.
